Internal Family Systems (IFS)

Have you ever said, “part of me wants to, but another part of me doesn’t”? Internal Family Systems (IFS) is built on the idea that this is true for all of us. The mind naturally has different parts, and having them is completely normal.

Some parts protect us: the inner critic, the part that keeps busy, the part that pulls away or holds on tight. Others carry pain from earlier experiences. When life has been overwhelming, especially in childhood, parts can be pushed into extreme roles to keep us safe. These roles aren’t who you really are. They are creative, adaptive responses to the situation you were in.

Beneath all of these parts is your Self: the calm, curious, compassionate core of you that is never damaged and knows how to heal. In IFS, we work to strengthen your relationship with Self, so it can listen to your parts and guide them. As they feel heard, parts can begin to trust that they no longer have to work so hard.

This inner relationship-building can create a sense of internal attachment, and many people find it also shifts how they connect with others. We’ll go at your pace, and you stay in the lead.
